A Greener and Healthier Baliwag

The Department of Social Welfare and Development Office Region III, together with the Local Government Unit of Baliwag, has successfully launched and implemented the Comprehensive Bio Intensive Gardening of the 1797 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program Household Beneficiaries, the said activity aims to promote a clean and green environment, kicking off at the grass root level.

             The activity involves maintaining the cleanliness of the beneficiaries home and surrounding, part taking in planting vegetables in their backyard (backyard gardening) either directly in the ground or via container gardening. Through planting vegetables in the backyard of each household, it does not only help sustain the clean air and filter air pollutants but also supplies household’s readily available crops for consumption. Through it food security for the household is there for guaranteed.

The activity was spear headed by the Municipal Action Team of Baliwag headed by its Team leader Ms Mercy Grace Ventura and her team Ms Aubrey, Ms Roschelle, Ms. Winona and Mr Allen Abenoja. All the beneficiaries, comprised of mostly housewives were taught about the proper execution of container gardening and back yard gardening, the Municipal Action Team partnered with the Municipal Agriculture office headed by Ms Arsenia Huertazuela, led in training and disseminating knowledge to the participant regarding the appropriate way of urban gardening, the training and learning sessions was done on the first quarter of the year and was continued thereafter with the cleaning and planting activity.

In the succeeding months of the year 2017 the beneficiaries planted their chosen crops and seedlings, of some were given freely by the Municipal Agricultural Office, some of the crops were tomatoes, eggplants and chili plant. This May some of the crops were already ready for harvesting, the families enjoyed reaping their own planted crops and some of them were even sold at the neighborhood as an additional source of income and others cooked and served it for the family to share. Cost free and nutritious meals readily accessible for the family.

To date the bio intensive gardening activity is successfully implemented in all the 27  barangays of baliwag comprising all the 1797 Panatwid Pamilya household beneficiaries and now collaborating with the different public schools in Baliwag in having their community B.I.G inside the schools on which the vegetables will be used in feeding programs and be harvested by the beneficiaries, this activity encourages not just the beneficiaries and their families to maintain the cleanliness of the surroundings and practice healthy living by consuming organic and own raised crops but also to advocate to the community to live healthy, making right food choices and the need to sustain and maintain a clean environment towards a healthy and robust community.
